Cricut Maker: Knife Blade Cutting Craft Foam

What thicknesses of craft foam can I cut with the Knife Blade?

  • 1.5 mm
  • 2 mm
  • 3 mm

What do I look for when buying materials?

  • Choose the material thickness that best suits your project.

How big can my cuts be?

  • Maximum cut size: 10.5" x 11.5" or 10.5" x 23.5"

What mat should I use?

  • StandardGrip Mat

How do I prepare the materials?

  • Lay the craft foam on the smooth mat side down. (Special finishes must be face up).
  • Tape all four edges of the material to the carpet within 1" of the corner (masking tape or blue painter's tape recommended).
  • On the Cricut Maker™ machine, move the white star wheels to the right (More information).
    • If left in place, star wheels can leave an imprint on the project material.
  • When cutting thicker craft foam, clean the front metal bar.
  • Make sure no part of your material goes under the rubber rollers (this could cause the machine to jam or go wrong)
  • Whenever possible, try a cut before cutting your main project.
    • If the edges come out tough, replace the blade before the final cut.

How long will my cuts take?

Thicker materials require multiple cutting passes with gradually increasing pressures. This means that blade cuts will take much longer than when cutting thinner materials with other blades.

Design Space will tell you approximately how long a knife blade cut will take.

  • Once you select a cutting setting and load your carpet for a Knife Blade project, an alert will inform you that a longer than usual cutting time is expected.
  • When the first cut pass is complete, Design Space calculates the expected cut time remaining based on the duration of the first pass and the number of pre-programmed passes for that material. It also shows the pass the machine is currently executing and how many total passes are expected.

What should I do while my machine is cutting?

  • Check machine cut frequently to review cuts

Once my cut is complete, what do I do next?

  • Expect to see impressions or blade cuts on the mat (if cutting multiple of the same images, place the image on different parts of your cutting mat for successful cuts).
  • Remove any remaining craft foam cutouts from the mat.
  • Once the cut is complete, carefully remove the cuts and then remove the tape and excess material.

Tips and Troubleshooting

  • If the material moves while cutting, your mat may not be sticky enough.
  • If the edges of the cut pieces are rough and uneven, the blade may need to be replaced.
